Tawang does not have a railway station or commercial airport, so travellers need to reach the region via a combination of air and road or rail and road. Tawang does, however, have a helipad, with helicopter services available from Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Guwahati.
Tezpur – Sonitpur Airport
If you are planning to fly to Tawang, Sonitpur Airport in Tezpur is one of the nearest airport options. Direct flights to Tezpur are limited and, at present, are available from Kolkata.
Tawang is approximately 330 km by road from Tezpur, and the journey takes around 10–12 hours.
Cabs are available from Tezpur and generally depart in the morning. Bus services are also available and typically depart in the evening, arriving in Tawang the following morning.
Guwahati – Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport
Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBI), Guwahati, is a convenient option as it is well connected to major cities across India.
Tawang is approximately 450 km by road from Guwahati, with the journey taking a minimum of 12 hours, depending on road and weather conditions.
Cabs are available from ASTC (Assam State Transport Corporation), Paltan Bazaar, Guwahati, and generally depart in the morning. Bus services are also available from the same location, usually departing around 11:00 AM and reaching Tawang the following morning.
As seating is limited, advance booking is strongly recommended for all transportation options.
Helicopter Service – Guwahati to Tawang
Helicopter services operate between Guwahati and Tawang, except on Sundays. With a limited seating capacity of approximately 10–12 passengers, advance booking is strongly recommended.
Tickets can currently be booked by contacting the counter at Guwahati Airport or the Aviation Officer at Tawang. Online booking through the State Government is currently not available.
The flight takes approximately 55 minutes. However, helicopter services are subject to operational conditions, including VIP movement, adverse weather, patient evacuation, technical issues, passenger availability and emergencies.
The authorities generally provide an update on the operational status approximately two hours before departure.
The average one-way fare from Guwahati to Tawang is approximately ₹4,000 per person.
Local Transport in Tawang
The Tawang Helipad is approximately 5 km from the town. Cabs may not be readily available at the helipad, so passengers are advised to arrange transportation in advance to reach their accommodation.
