The Concept
A local Cycling body, Tawang Cycling Association (TCA) first came up with the idea of conducting a Cycling event in the district in order to promote biking culture and hence promote adventure tourism. The riders of the association were keen on riding the lesser-used trails and soon began to find the history behind the trials. They then, decided to work on the trials and hence conduct a cycling event.
The Vision
The TCA hopes to transform Tawang into a biking paradise and an ultimate destination for adventure tourism. They intend to conduct biking events every year and hope to attract riders from all around the globe. Their aim is to revive the forgotten history of ancient routes of Mon-Tawang some of which has trading significance with Tibet.
Experience the Thrill of Enduro Biking at 10,000 ft
Tawang is a mystical land perched at an altitude of 10,000 ft above sea level surrounded by lofty mountains. It has a total area of 2,172 Sq.km (approx). The name of Tawang is believed to have derived its name from the grandiose of Tawang Monastery perched on the edge of the ridge running along the western part of Tawang township.
The popular interpretation is that the name “Tawang” was given by his holiness the Mera Lama Lodre Gyatso. “TA” means Horse and “Wang” means blessed. As legend goes the site of the present Monastery is believed to have chosen by a Horse owned by Mera Lama Lodre Gyatso. Mera Lama Lodre Gyatso was on search for an appropriate place to establish a Monastery and was unable to locate any appropriate site. Finally he decided to sit on prayer for a guidance of a divine power. As he opened his eyes after prayer, he found his horse missing. So wearily he went out for searching his horse and found it on top of hill calm and quite. Believed it a good omen, Mera Lama Lodre Gyatso decided to initiate a work for building up of Monastery with the help of people living across the land of Monpas in the later part of 17th century according to the whishes of 5th Dalai Lama.
Another theory goes by the tale of King Kala Wangpo who ruled over Mon region in the 7 th century. Tawang was called Tana Mandal Gang back then. Mandal Gang means an elevated place surrounded by lofty mountains.
